LOAN POLL FIGT7RES. Some controversy seems to have arisen in regard to the three-fifths majority necessary for the recent loan poll at Onewhero to have been carried. In recording the result of the voting in our issue of Tuesday, October 24th, viz., 72 votes " for " and 59 "against" we mentioned that on a three-fifths majority basis a vote of 59 "against" required a total of 89 votes "for" to be effective. In other words, the votes 72 recorded in favour of the loan were 17 short of the requisite total to be effective. A s the outcome of a communication that reached us from a correspondent we made " a correction " in our issue of Friday, October 27th, by stating that the previous figures of 89 should have read 79 and that therefore the proposal only failed by a shortage of eeven votes. As a matter of fact both sets of figures can in different ways be regarded as being in order. " A shortage of seven votes," as stated, was meant to convey the meaning that if seven of the "noe*»" could have been secured to have favoured the loan the proposal would have been carried on the gross number of votes recorded, viz., 131. The prior announcement must, however, be accepted as being more substantially accurate as an adverse vote of 59 could only have been surmounted by a total of 148 votes being recorded, thus necessitating a favourable vote of 89 instead of 72 as cast.
