BUCKLAND.
A SUCCESSFUL SOCIAL.
Probably the most successful concert and social ever held in Buckland took place on the evening of October 13th. The occasion was the inauguration of the Buckland Old Girls' Association, formed of girls who had been educated at the Buckland School.
A splendid programme was given by the " Old Girls " and by present and past lady teachers. In the tableau, " The Story of the War," characters were sustained as follows : Britain, Miss Lily Johnston ; France, Miss L. Allan ; Germany, Miss Gladdy Leighton; Austria, Miss C. Home ; Russia, Miss Una Sweet; Italy, Miss Iris Wright; Belgium, Miss H. Home ; Servia, Miss M. Allan ; U.S. America, Miss Harper ; Canada, Miss Neal; Australia, Miss Davy ; New Zealand, Miss F. Attenborrow ; India, Miss Baguall, Japan, Miss Eva Harris ; Turkey, Miss G. Neal; Bulgaria, Miss H. Wilcox ; Roumania, Miss R. Allan ; Portugal, Rose Allan ; Victory, Miss Wily; Peace, Miss Edie Todd. The other items were vocal solos by Misses Bagnall, Davy, and Mrs Hewitt; recitations by Misses Anderson and Costello ; trio, •' Three Old Maids of Lee " ; Misses Home, Wright and Neal ; and tableau, " Queen of Angels," by the Misses Bagnall, L. Johnston (Queen), Hill, Wolfe, Sweet, Waterhouse, Todd. The President, Mrs H. H. D. Wily stated that since the school started 390 girls had passed through the school and the object of the Society was to prevent in the future the losing sight of old pupils. A silver badge with the initials of the Association and their motto " Amemus Ceteras" was to be taken as a pledge that the wearer would always greet and, if necessary, assist any other wearer of the badge. The Buckland Old Girls were proud of the scholastic attainments of their old school, but they were far prouder of the fact that hardly one old boy, who could possibly go, had failed to respond to the call for soldiers. The first work the Old Girls had set themselves to carry out was the erection of a suitable Roll of Honour. As far as she knew, although Old Girl Associations were common in High Schools and Colleges, no other such Association existed in a country Primary School. For Buckland to make a first start was, however, not strange as Buckland always led. At the close of the entertainment supper was handed round by the Old Girls and the hall was cleared for a Leap Year dance, the music being supplied by Mrs Davy, Miss Davy making an efficient M.C. Great praise is also due to Mr A. Smith for his management of the stago and lights for the tableaux, etc.
