ONEWHERO.

LOAN POLL FAILS. INSUFFICIENT MAJORITY. The keenly debated topic of what is known as Hamilton's .deviation scheme, whereby it was proposed to revert to an old surveyed road through Mr Hamilton's property in place of a portion of the main One-whero-Wairamarama road, reached last Saturday what for the present can be regarded as a finality when a poll of ratepayers was taken in connection with the necessary financial outlay for the project. The Clerk of the Weather" evidently thought there was too much heat in •the excited neighbourhood and sent many showers and much cold wind Nevertheless, so keen was the question that voters from the farthest end of the district and even from Auckland arrived, and braving the elements and the mud registered their important vote?. The polling both was at the Te Hirua Hall and Mr J. A. Bark acted as polling officer. Voting took place from 9 a.m. till 6 p.m. When the poll closed quite a hush of excitement fell on the waiting group, for all expected a close result, as in spite of the weather a large percentage had voted. The result of the count was : For the loan 72 Against the loan 59 Informal 1

As a three-fifths majority was necessary to carry the proposal (i.e., three votes to two) a vote of 59 against required a total of 89 votes "for" to be effective. The proposal to have the loan was therefore not carried.

At the last Tuakau sale a sheep and lamb, donated to the Belgian Fund by Messrs Bark and Correil, was sold and resold and brought to ijhat most deserving fund about lOgns.
