WHANGARATA.

The ordinary mooting of the W'bdiigarata Branch of tha Farmers' Union was held on Friday, Sepu->u-ber 8;h. In the abseuou of Mr J. Fukoii, the president, Mr J. A letter was read from the Provincial Executive asking fur an expression of opinion from tlTe Branch on the proposed scheme for the supervision by committees of returned soldiers taking up laid. The Branch considered the idea was a good one providing the committees were constituted of go >d practical farmers knowing the best methods adapted to ■ lie particular locality where the soldiers are settled.—A letter from the Provincial Secretary intimated that through the droits of tho Executive a slight reduction iu Auctioneers' lees had been secured. This was leceived with a good deal of satisfaction and hopes were espresso i that still further reductions would bo brought about as the present high charges were absolutely exorbitant.

A very pleasant function took place iu the Wbaugarata School on Monday, September 11th, tho icvidents taking the opportunity of Miss Beauiisk's return on holidays to show the appreciation and esteem iu which she is held, by presenting her with a beautiful gold baugle. Mr J. Fulton, who was chairman during the whole of Miss Beamish's turn in the \Vhangarata School as assistant teacher, made the presentation in a very neat and apprupiiate speech eulogising the good work accomplished by her as a teacher and also the pait she had taken in any matteis iu connection with the Patriotic League. Ho wished her every success and advancement iu her prof us: ion. The opportunity was also taken of bidding farewell to Mr F. Parker, who was home ou tiual leave. All wished him good luck andai safe i\ turu to Now Zealand.
