DAIKY HERD SAIE. An interesting sale was witnessed on Wednesday at Mr W. Nichnlls' farm, when his selected herd ot dairy cows was offered by auction. Mr Nicholls is recognised as a careful and thorough farmer, and was known to have some particularly choice cattle; consequently, although the herd was not a large one there was a very big attendance of buyers and some exceptional prices were realised. The cattle were mixed Jersey and Shorthorns, but the Jersey strains found general favour, scoring top prices on every occasion. All were in the best ot condition, thoroughly souod and exceptionally quiet, and showed to have been gently and considerately treated by the owner. Six springing heifers were first offered, mostly showing a considerable Jersey strain. These ranged from £!) ?8 to til 10s eacb, tbe average for the mx being £lO 13s 4d. lhe cows, of which there were seventeen, all young, averaged £ls 10s each. The top price was reached by a choice grade Jersey named "Pet," the ligure being £1!) 5?. "Beauty," at £K>, was top pries lor Shorthorns, several others realising £ls 1")?. Mr Nicholls expressed himself as being thoroughly satisfied at the result of the sale, but nevertheless, like a good farmer, is sorry to part, with his stock alter such careful selection. However, his only unmarried son has just gone to Trentham and it is impossible fur Mr Nicholls to carry un the turin wori single-handed; h:i;ce the sale.
