MAUKU.
As the fite for the Mauku :■ tati'-u sits astride of the Union mail ihe Vublic Works Department are finding it necessary to close a portion of that road Thsy aro now ai work making a deviation along the northern side of the railway lino, crossing it by means of an oveihead bridge, thus avoiding the dangers of a level crossing, and rejoining the original road at Mr Guthrie's store. The doing of this work may be taken as a sign that the completion of the rail-laying as far as the Mauku station will not bo very loug delayed. The County Council are putting the main roads in the district into a state of excellent repair, but apparently the very existence of by-roads is completely forgotten. Since the local lioad Board became defunct these back-roads have had to take care of themselves, and had we not been happy in having two normally dry seasons in succession most of them would by now have been in an almost impassable state. It is to be hoped that before anothor winter comes the Council will have learned to recognise that its responsibilities do not begin and end with the main roads.
