PATUMAHOE
The ladies of the district hold a Leap Year Ball in the Public Hall on Wednesday of last week, and the gathering proved a great success both socially and financially. The ladies themselves undertook the management and everything was carried out in surprisingly good style. A pleasant little function took place in the Mauku Hotel on Wednesday evening last, when the Public Works Staff gave a dinner to two of their comrades, i J rivate Monds and Corporal Ryan, who were back on their final leave from Trentham. Mr Hall-Jones occupied the chair, and Miss F. Bailey officiated at the piano. The usual toasts were honoured, interspersed with musical items. Mr J. Henry had the misfortune to have a large stack of hay burnt on Sunday evening. The origin of
the fire so far remaiDS a mysteiy. Mr Henry estimates his loss at between JEBO and £IOO, and it is all the more unfortunate for him as he was depending on the stack for winter feed for his dairy herd of 60 cows on the home farm. ♦
