A correspondent writes: "Will eonicune wake up the Town Board? Members came in like a rocket and will go out like a stick. Winter is at liand and the two main loads are yet ijntouched. Wbst is the Board's claim to progress',' Truly we have gone from bad to worse. There is absolutely no reason why some progress should not have been made. The Board is out for 'go as you please.' They CHn got labour if they like" Mr Hitchcock, of Auckland, has bought five acres of land from Mr Murray, part of the Park Estate, at about an acre, lie is to erccl a new building immediately Mr William Cioskcrry, who was seriously ill, has now recovered Several parents of families in the district have announced their decision that it must not be said that their tons wero compelled to go to the front, and they are now auxious that the young fellows should volunteer
Th? official list of eligibles supplied to the Papakura Recruiting Committee was re-adjusted at a sub-committee meeting held recently in Mr Gillespie's office. The names ot 105 men residing outside the district were deleted, and 11 nameß added, leaving a total of 83, -17 of which are single and the balance married. The replies received in answer to the official cards circulated were limited to three straight-out offers for enlistment and four conditional. The committee were ol opinion that compulsion was imminent, and that it was consequently not worth while to make a pereonal canvass
