ROAD HOARD ELECTION The election of members oi' the Road Board has pa3sed olf without a contest, Messrs D R Martin, J A Sampson and J Taylor having bean elected without opposition fjr th 3 Wa j renga subdivision, and Messrs R Clephane and H S Hill for Rangiriri. No nominations were received from the Maramarua eub-division, two sea's, and a fresh elcctian is therefore necessitated, and is fix id 1 r the 22nd inst., with nominations to close on the 16th inst. Mesßra Martin and Taylor are new member? of the Board, and Mr .1 (J Browr.e, the retiring chairman, did not seek re-election RATEPAYERS' ANNUAL MEETING
The annual meeting of ratepayers was held on Thursday of last week in the Hall, Waerenga. About 40 were present, and Mr J U Browne pre ided. The balance sheet lor the year endad 31st March was presented, Bhowing the Board to be in a slightly better position than last year
Mr Browne referred to the cardial rela lors existing between nil members t.f the Board, and said that although the past year had been an extraordinary one owing to the general tightness of money the outgoing were handing over the alfairs to their succceors in a satisfactory condition. He was prepared to uphold every ittm of expenditure Mr Hall moved a hearty vote of thanks to the rptirmg chairmar, who he said had ruled the Board fail 1 v and justly. —Mr Clephane seconded the motion, which whs carritd unanimously
The question ot rating on unimproved values was discussed, the meeting passing a vote in favour ol' a poll being taken on the subject HEKOES BANQUETED
Lost Friday a banquet was tendered to two returned heroes from tte Dardanelles, viz., (lunner C J Droke arcl Corporal Johnston. The function was held in thu Wacrenaa Hall and some one hundred people sat down to the repast, which had been prepared by the lady members of the committee, and reflected great credit on their efforts The duties of chairman was entrusted to Mr Jameß Tayior and were well carried out
In proposing the toast of "Our (Jucsls," Mr Horricks referred ti the nobl * work done by the colonials at the Dardanelles, and said that all honour was due to the brave men who had fought on that fanrus peninsular.—The toast was drunk with extreme enthusiasm, cheer after ch:er nnjing out for the two returned heroes
Mr J W K-iih propos:d_the toast of "Absent Friends," and Mr Syd Waite responded. Mr C Sampson submitted the "Aimy and Navy," to which Mr Bennett suitably replied. Mr J Sampson proposed the toast ot "The Ladies," and Mr VV Jeii'eria ably respooded, and Mr Bennett proposed the health of "The Nurses and Doctors at the Front."
Mu ical items were contributed by Mrs Moyle song, Mr Garr.hsm song, and Mr H Dimmock violin sold, Mies Carter giving a recitation The proceedings concluded with a dance
Some fair bags of ducks have been secured on the Whangamaiino since the shooting season opened last week, but there is a scarcity ot pheasants in the district. Mr Jack Keith and a party of twelve who ventured to the Heads were well rewarded for their outing. Besides enjoying a splendid trip the sportsmen secured 216 bird?. This party were not without a little adventure, as through not knowing the time of the tidec, several of them embarked on low-liyng islands, and when the hunch returned for thorn they were found clinging to cabbage trees surrounded by water.
