DRURY
Always trying to make the sendoff gatherings more attractive, and enjoyable, as well as to give "our boys" a good time before they leave to do duty as Soldiers of the King in foreign lands, seems to be the aim of the Committee who undertake to carry these functions to a successful issue in Drury. Last Saturday night a most enjoyable farewell function was tendered to Messrs Onslow Parker, Colin Clark, Elgar Bath, Garret Kearney and Ernest Hill who are about to leave for the front. The tables weighed down with goods of the edible kind, and the number who gathered to partake far exceeded the expectations of the most sanguine. Mr Joseph Flanagan once again acted as chairman and was assisted by a willing band of helpers. The proceedings commenced with the singing of the National Anthem with true patriotic fervour, after which not a dull moment occurred for the remainder of the evening. Songs were contributed by Mrs J. Dickson and Miss Millsom, and the speeches were apportioned as follows : "The Guests," Mr Jos. Flanagan, responses by all the guests; "The women in the service of our King" was the subject of Mr W. C. Glasson's speech, the response was by Miss Cossey; Mr Fyfe spoke for the "Soldiers' Parents" and Mr Parker responded. Taking the speeches from a critical point of view they were much above the average and all speakers expressed patriotic sentiments that were heartily received by their hearers. The Secretary, Mr W. Tooman and Mr T. Brooks worked hard, also other members of the committee and no doubt felt their labours had borne good fruit. The musical arrangements were in the skilful and capable hands of Miss McNaughton. The catering by Messrs J. and J. Rugg was up to the firms usual high standard. A dance concluded the proceedings, the music being supplied by the Messrs Cossey Brothers and Morgan, whilst Messrs Tooman and Hamilton as M.C's gave every attention to the wants of visitors and patrons.
