TUAKAU.

PATRIOTIC WORK. ADDRESSES BY MRS GUNSON AND MISS SPEDDING. A visit by Mrs J. H. Guugou, Mayoress of Auckland and President of the Auckland Ladies' Patriotic League, and Miss Spedking, secretary, was paid to Tuakau on Thursday evening last, when a public meeting was held with the object of persuading the local Patriotic League to co-operate with the parent body in Auckland in tho work of despatching gift parcels to the troops at the front every month. Mr Dynes Fulton occupied the chair and oa tho platform iu addition to the visitors were Mrs Hunter as chairwoman and Mrs Lewis, as secretary, of tho local League. Mrs Gunson and Miss Spedding both gavo very interesting addresses and referred to the Dominion Conference held in Wellington, with the object of making the women's work throughout New Zealand a Dominion movement, with tLo four centres, Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin as organisers. They explained fully tho organisation and the economical working of the Auckland body. They also gave particulars of tho proposal contents of tho monthly gift parcel and suggested that Tuakau should try and subscribe 200

2s 6d per parcel. Promise cards to that end were distributed.

An urgent appeal was made to join and take part in the work of the local League. Musical items were rendered by the Misses Mayall and Dickens -pianoforte, song Miss Hyde and recitation Edith Paton.

Votes of thanks were accorded to Mrs Gunson and Miss Spedding for their interesting addresses and very hearty cheers were given for " the boys " at the front. The chairwman said that the Tuakau district had done more than its sharo in the matter of men and mouey in proportion to its population. He, in conjunction with Mi - Glasgow, had begun a recruiting campaign, and out of four men visited two enlisted at once and two were giving the matter serious consideration.

The re-valuation of the Tuakau Town Board Dis rict is proceeding, Mr Morgon, of the Valuation Department, being the officer in charge of the woik. The latest addition to the district's quota of recruits is Mr Jack Morgon.
