WHANGAMARINO.
It is understood that the new settlers on Mr Mardon's property, adjoining Mr Ed. Hallett's farm, intend to make application to the Government to get the road opeyed up through the Crown Lands to the foot of the Meri Meri Hill, on the Main South Road. At present they have no outlet to Mercer. The road has already been laid oil' through Mr Glass' property over the railway line, giving a straight outlet to Maramarua and the back portion of Te Kauwhata.
We understand that the large swamp on the top side of the road at Whangamarino has been sold to Mr Zimmerman who is having it drained, the outlet which runs under the railway lino through io the Whangamarino Stream giving a fall of from live to six foet.
Tho sottlors ave raising a petition to have thopieco of country between Whangamarino and To Kauwhata drained as it has been proved by tho new surveys that there is a buflicient fall to effect tho desired end.
Despite the prognostications of many, the Whangamarino Swamp is giving excellent results as a grazing ground. Mr Glaes has running on the property lot) fat bullocks and Mr Ed. Hallett has a similar number. Instead of the soil being peat it haa proved to be alluvial
