Mill weutb;r conditions have prevailed for the finish of the oat harvest, but on the other band the young turnip crops are doing well through the nice warm showers that nave fallen recently. The very early crops of potatoes and onions were a failure owing to blight. There are, however, smie later sown patches of potatoes which are free from tha disease, and they ire making good headway. The ratepayers are inclired to express iheir feelings strongly in reference to the bad state of our main metalled road o*ing to the same being littered with loose metal, but it is pleasing to note that it has b?en raked off as far as the ridinsr boundary. It would not be out of the way to suggest that the Waipipi riding shout] do likewise on its portion of the main road as some af the grades are very bad with loose stones, and constitute a jangcr to traffic

The school holidays have ended with the children not getting their annual pchool picnic. The usual custom has been for the committee to act as promoters, and with the assistance of householders to arrange the picnic, but bo far this reason it has not come to pass The question is being asked: "What has become of the Hall Committee io thu district? Have they gone to the front, or have they forgotten that sueb a building is requited?" The urgent need of i hall has been testified times out of number at socials held in the school On Thursday evening last a farewell social and presentation was arranged and carri d out by the following committee, viz.:—Messrs W J Michie, chairman, W Watson, secretary, M Uleeson, W McCarthy, A Jones. H Furniss, A Wright, G Martin and A J Furniss. The function was in honour of Private C Walsh, who la shortly tu leave for the front. Mr A Wright acted as M.C and Messrs Cbiplen and Hewitt supplied the music. The gathering was a success in every way, and was thoroughly enjoyed by a large attendance. Un behalf of the committee Mr A Wright made a presentation of a cheque to Private Walab, and wished him good luck and good health. Private Walah BUifabJy acknowledged the gif|
