The continuous dry leather has had a very detrimental effect on the pastures and turnip crops, although it has been ideal weather for harvesting. This district was not so fortunate as was Auckland last Saturday, where over one inch of rain was recorded. The storm clouds passed over here but practically no rain fell. However, fortune was kinder yesterday and the downfall of moisture was much appreciated borne very good crops of wheat are to be seen in stook on Mr W Finlay's and Mr W Howe's farms Mr Adolph, traction engine proprietor, has made preparations to cope with the increased cropß. He has purchased a new thrashing plant and straw press, so the familiar "hum of the drum" will soon be heard from early morn till late in the evening.

A series of weekly socials which are being held in the Patumahoe Hall, organised by Messrs W Howard, F Kavanagb, senr, and Koy Mojre, to defray the expensed of the Fonsonby Dium and Fife Bard's visit to the New Year sports, which was so much appreciated, are proving very popular and are well attended.

Patumahoe has quite a prosperous appearance. Two new buildings have been completed during the last few weeks, viz, the new post office and a very nice residence built by Mr J Henry. The post office is a very substantial building, with a dwelling attached for the postmaster. It has a tiled roof, which is something new for this part of tte districtt. The official opening is to take place about the end of February, when a great day for Patumahoe is assured. All the business places will be closed and a holiday declared in honour of the occasion
