The appointment at tbe last meeting of C<s Barter and Motion and himself as a Committee, wi-h power to add to tbeir number, for the purpose of farwelling departing soldiers and welcoming returned wounded heroes was mentioned by the Mayor (Mr Mason) at the Borough Council meeting on Wednesday. Bis Worship took exception to the fact that, as reported in tbe "Times," a meeting of i the committee had been held, of which be received no notice and at which additional members had been selected, one of the latter being appointed as chairman and another as secretaiy. The Mavor went on to say fiat io his official capacity it was only becoming and proper that he should act as tbe mouthpiece of the Comitttee and of the town at such functions, for the carrying out of which ' the committee had been formed. Cr Motion state - ! that the meeting referred to by ths Mayor had been rurnedlv arranged in view of the departure of a soldier for Trentham, and as the Mayor was not always "on hand" it was thought better to nave another person as chairman. Cr Barter denied that there was any intention to put a slight on the Mayor, a; the apt.uinted chairman woull always give way to the Mayor when he was present. Cr Kosdley considered that the proper course to pursue was tor all the Councillors to be on the Committee as the Council officially "repres°nted the town. Cr Baiter said he was quite agreeable to accept Cr Hoadley's suggestion and he moved that the whule of the Council should be added to tbe Committee, the Mayor to act as conveaor. Cr ffoadley seconded and the motion was parried.
