POKENO.
A very successful concert and dane in aid of the Wounded Soldiers' Fund took place in the local Hall on Thursday evening last. Although the weather conditions were unfavourable a full bouse assembled and a most enjoy* able entertainment was provided by local artists. As everything was provided free, tbe local funds will benefit considerably, and it is intended to bold a fancy dreaa ball and another concert in the succeeding weeks to still further increase the Southern Queen's total. The sale of tickets in the different art unions has been vigorously carried on by the local committee. The weather has been of a very boisterous nature lately, more suitable for the month of' September than November, when a more genial climate is expected.' As a result of a very severe blow about one half of one side of the roof of the Presbyterian Church was forcibly removed about five chains, and left in a dilapidated condition on the main road, knocking out a telegraph pole en route and breaking down a large biuegum tree. The church was lately removed from a site on the hill side about a mile distant, and it is thought that the rocking received weakened the nails, thus giving the wind an opening, it is not suggested that the local pastor has been using any "roof lifting" orotary nor that the choir's efforts were in any way responsible for the accident. Tbe energetic secretary rallied up a working bee and the twisted icon was soon straightened out and ueatly replaced, little the worse for its aerial experiences. Mr Phil Wyman has had the misfortune to break his arm through falling off his horse when stock driving. He is making good progress towards recovery. By a coincidence his brother, Captain Ralph Wyman, sustained similar injuries at tbe front recently, so our doubtful young tellows of tbe
"cold fMt" variety can take tresh heart. Mr Robert Gordon, a ion of Mr Thomas Gorrioo, ot the Valley, returned by the Willoebra, having been wounded and invalided home. A younger brother i« on his way to the front, and hit sister was nominated to fill the position ot local Queen, but could not see her A way clear to accept. Mr Gordon, senr., ia an old Constabulary officer and "hoes" our local brigade ot gallant defenders into line on week ends. So who will dare to aay the Gordon clan haa not ably upheld it* ancient traditions ?
