PATKIOTIC SOCIAL,

Marked entnusissm characterised the social and dance held on Friday evening last, in the King Edward Hall, fir the p&rpoae of assisting the local Patriotic Committee. The total amount realised was £34 5s 6d. Mrs .Tribe, as originator of the function, Mr George Morgon, as manager, and the Patriotic Comstnittee are to be congratulated on the succeFs attained. A Mock Court was conducted by Mr Morgon, and- a good patriotic spirit was shown, several people paying double the amount of the fines inflicted Mr Morgon further excelled as an auctioneer, selling a cushion presented by Mrs Tribe, fifteen times over before it was finally "knocked down," the total amount accrued as a result being £l3 lis 6d. Good business was done by Mrs Calvert in fortune telling. The dance was mest enjoyable, a pleasing variety of Eccornpanimsnts being played bv Mr Rutland, Te Kauwhata; Mrs Valentine, Mercer and Miss Neilson, Mercer. Mr Charles Tarrant veiy capably carried out the duties of M.C. A meeting of tha ueneral Carnival Committee was held on Monday evening, when it was decided that a Mock Court be hnld ou a date to be fixed. It was decided to thank Messrs Willis Bros, for their donation ot a quarter acre section of land, and it was decided to dispose of it by art union, tickets for which will be 2s 6d each.
