PAPAKURA.
[A branch office of the "Fukekohe Times" will bhorlly be opened at Mr Godwyn Smith's Estate Agency Office, Papakura, under the management cf Mr A. G. Yartiley, late of the " le Aroha News."] PATRIOTIC FUNDS, lhs annual meeting of the Pap - kura Patriotic League was held cn last week. The balance sheet was presented by the treasurer, Mrs A. Willis. This showed that £l4O hid been subscribed to the Empire Defence Fund, £l5O 13s lOd to tha Belgian Hi lief Fund and £lls lis and 5U suits pyjamss to the Hospital Ship Fund. An amount of £lOl 14s 7d subscribed to the Pat lotic Fund is still in hand, as is also £B9, which is an emergency fund. The treasurer explained that regular contributions of £lO per month were being subscribed to fhe Belgian Relief Fund. Fifty leather waistcoats had also been forwarded recently.
Ihe matter of disposing of the balance of the Patriotic Fund was discussed, and it was suggested that it ehouJd be paid to the Piovincial Fund. The matter, however, was deferred and will be considered by tha Executive at the next mceti.g. A vo eof ihanks to tha officers and collector?, who were all reelected, was carried by acclamation.
Mr Willis stated that a great amount had been donated from tha district to the Auckland JFunds direct, included ia which were sales of stock.
An organ recital in aid of the Organ Fund was held on Wednesday last, in the Presbyterian Church, the organist and choirmaster of St. David's, Aucklnd, Mr E. S. Craston, Mus., Bac, being the performer. He was assisted in the recital by Misses Muriel and Ella Adams as scloisls. Thaie was a large attendance and the assemblage greatly enjoyed the programme submitted. Tbe following are the averaged of the Papakura Cricket Club for last season:---Batting: (. Swan, 17, 5.4; A. Buller, 15, 4.4, H. Wilson, 17, 3.36; G. Wiiso.-, 16, 3.5; W. Booker, 3, 35; W. Crichton, 6, 3.4; f. Johnston, K\ 3.4. Bowling: W. Waugb, 36 wickets at 5.71; H. Lodgp, 43, 7.3; C. Clark, 30, ".6; K. Merrington, 23, 10.43. Tophus were awarded as fo'lows: —Bowli 6 average: W. Waugb, Nolan's tropby. Highest score: C. Clark, (51) Johnston's trophy. Best fieldsman, H. Lodge, D. W. Jones' tiophy. Most improved player: D. Johnston, W. Crichton's tropby. During the season the Club played sixteen matches, of which it won seven, lost seven, and tbe other two b?ing drawn.
A very BUCCEBsfuI plant sale, etc., was held in the Parish Ball on Thursday last, the result being the addition of about £SO to the Emergency Fund. The sale was promoted by Mrs Shanaghan, and the idea was to run it on a small scale, but so many things were sent in by the public that the services of an auctioneer had to be requisitioned to sell goads left over. Mr J. T. Stem bridge, of Pukekohe, kindly gave his services and everything was sold. Miss Cave presided at a jumble stall, and Miss Gladys Cave at a sweet stall, while Mrs Jones and Miss Willis had charge of the tea ro:me.. The Kev. J. W. Monckton has been aßked to lecture here on behalf of the Patriotic League, and is expected about the c ' f October. His subject will be ' -nc Dardanelles." The Papakura Cricket Club will open its season on Saturday next, when a match, Married v. Single, will be played. Thj proceeds will be donated to the Papakura Wounded Soldiers' Fund.
