WHANGARATA.
PATRIOTIC SOCIAL, The fortnightly euchre and dance held in the seho-jlhouae on Friday night last was most successful, considering the very doubtful state of the weather, the attendance being over fifty. In the absence of the chairman, Mr Ewing, in the early part of the evening, Mr Whiteside opened the proceedings. After singing the National Anthem euchre was proceeded with, and judging by the merriment going on the players were having a good time. Mies Marjorie Ewing won first prize for ladies, a silver pin cushion in the form of a frog, and Mr E. McGahan gained first for men—a pocket book. Ihc minor prizes fell to Miss Fraser and Mr T. Clark. The opening of these two latter mysterious parcels caused immense amusement. After supper, to which full justice was done, had been handed round, dancing commenced and was kept up until the early hours. A nice sum was added to the Ladies' Patriotic Club as a result of the night's proceeds. The gathering was the linal for the season of the euchre and dance socials. As the result of a strong appeal from the wife of one of the older residents for leather waistcoats for our soldiers being read out by Mr Ewing at the previous fortnightly euchre, Whangarata has provided money for 26 waistcoats, and the amount has been forwarded to the Mayoress of Auckland. The contributions were:—Mrs Ewing, Mr Ewing, Mr Hartley, Mr and Mr Coad, 3 waistcoats each; Mr and Mr Lawrence, 2; Mrs Hayward, Mr and Mrs Rule, Mrs T. Smeed, Mr A. Smced, Mr Marwoo.l, iVIr Whiteside, Mr I'arker, Brewster Bros, Dromgool Bros.. Mr Douglas Ewing, Miss Beamish and S.l'., one each.
