It was pointed ou'< by the cie;k that this prese:.t rats collected would only cover the rose of the maintenance of drains, aad it was en the assjmplicn that (he extra .rate should be expended in further improving tift draks that members gave tueir unanimous support to the increase, it was recognised that the present time, owing to the effects of the war, was not opportune to incr?es3 the rates heavily. A BKIDUE WANTED. Messrs J. William?, H. Sedgwick and F. J. tJregmen formed a deputation that waited on the Board to aek fur assistance to wart's a proposal to erect a bridge at McCarthy's drain, on the Western drain road, where duriig the recent heavy rains the pipes in the drain Wi-re insufficient to carry the water awav, the pipes clogging end backing 'the water up. Mr Bregmen explained that the matter had been before the Franklin County Ceuncil and had bem referred to Cr Higginstn and the engineer. The county engineer had estimated that it would co:t £22 to erect a suitable bridge. On Mr West's proposal, seconded By Mr B?nr, it was resolved that the Board should pay the sum of £lO towards the cost, members being of the opinion that it was the Council's duty to erect the bridge. Mr Bregmen intimated that some of the settlers interested in the bridge were prepared to contribute towards defraying the coat.
It was further resolved that the Board should confer with the county engineer and Cr Uigginsun on the matter. FINANCE. The financial statement, showing a debit balance of £23 odd, was adopted.
