LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Tha Rev. J. C Fussell is moving in the matter of fcavirg a reading room for young men established in Waiuku. He proposes to enlist the sympathy and help of the Chanbej of Commerce, so that the enterprise may be put on a good foundation. The Meth.dist Foreiga Missionary effort was inaugurated on the 4th inst., the totel amount coll cted to date being £l6.
If th 3 present gradual increase in the average weekly attendance of pupils attendirg the Waiuku schotl is maintained tnere is every reason to believe that a male assistant will be appointed to the teichirg staff. The weekly average attendance receded of la'e ha 3 been 158, and if that number can be increased by two acd maintained for twelve months the distiict and school world be entitled to an assistant. Parents should endeavour to assist Mr Harris towards that end. It would be a step further in the advano mer.t ct the district, Bnd, in addition, would allow tor more time being given to the tuition of the pupils.
Litutenaiit Warwick Fussell, brother of the Waiuku Church of England minister, is in camp at Liverpool, New South Wtles, waiting to go to the front. The Kev. J. We are pleased lo report that Mr George Pickard, who h 33 been laid aside with illness, is making satis factory progress towards recovery. In recognition cf the pupils attending the Waiuku School annexing all the prises, with one exception, in writing at tha Franklin A. and P Society's February show, a certificate of merit has been presented by the So'ci2ty to the school. It should also be mentioned that Peggy Mearcs, Grace Patt&rsjn and Ted FuEsell were awarded prizes in writing competitions at the recent Hamilton Winter Show. Land agenis report good business, the demand for properties in the district being regular. A farm of 20 acres, gold on behalf of Mr K. J. Fenwick by Messrs Herrold and Mellsorf, reached the highly satisfactory turn per acre of £35. Mr J. W. Jordan, postmaster, is to shortly pay* a visit to his relatives in Wellington.
