MERCER.

At the meeting of tie Raglan County Councii, held cn Wednesday that body was asked to give its support to the petition to be presented to Parliament by the Mercer Town Board asking tor the erection of a public bridge across the Waikato Kiver at a point a iittla below Sweeney's Island, where the river is only a matter of six or seven chains wide. The suggested approach to the bridge on tii: Mercer side is on the Great South road, whicb would give access to the whole of the Raglan County. The chairman, Mr C. Johnstone, said that unless the Mercer Town Board offered to contribute on the pound for pound basis, they had no earthly hope of getting the bridge. It was generally agreed that a bridge at the spot mentioned would be comparatively inaxpensive and exceedingly convenient, while i would also result in the opening up" of a large tract of country. The Council decided to give the petition its support.
