FARMERS' UNION STOCK BRANCH.
A meeting of the Central Committee of the above was held in the Farmers' Union rooms, Albert street, on Wednesday evening. There were present:—Major Luak, in the chair, and Messrs Makgill, Bell, McGregor and Wily. The secretary, Mr Huey, reported that since the last meeting the subcommittee had circularised all branches of the Union upon the aims and rules of the stock branch.
A lengthy diECUSsion took place upon the regulations made by the Government in taking over ttc surplus meat supply for the use of the Imperial Government, and it was resolved to send circulars to all branches fully epxlaining the details of the scheme, and also giving particulars of the average returns that might be expected from the sale of cattle and sheep. It was also resolved to endeavour to get the Government to take over all existing contracts for insurance upon meat already in the freezing chambers. Mr McGregor pointed out the difficulty that at present existed in getting live stock over the Main Trunk line, stock trains taking some thirty hours to accomplish a jouraey thst should be completed in ten or eleven. It was resolved to ark the Minister for Railways to put on regular goods trains, upon wbich live stock should take precedence over other freight, to be run through with all reasonable dispatch.
