OTAUA SPORTS.

A Successful Function. Officials.—Patron, Right Hon. W. F. Massey, M.P.; president, Mr R. T. Reid; judges, Messrs C. Motion and L>, Neil; starter, Mr H. Hammond; handicappers, Messrs J. HanHing, A. Hammond and T. McDonnell; secretary, Mr R. S. Morrison.

The Otaua annual spnrts fixture took place in Mr J. Denize's paddock on Thursday. There was a large attendance and the affair passed off very successfully. The morning cpened dull and hazy and rain Beemed very probable, but happily the function passed off with only a slight drizzling. All parts of the district were well represented, the horses and vehicles which conveyed people to the ground being very numerous. The Waiuku motor cars also carried a lot of passengers. Good nominations were receivedfor the handicap events closing several days before the fixture. The hurdle race attracted 11, the Otaua Cup event 16, half-mile race 10, quarter-mile ( J and a bicycle race 8. Other events with post entries were also well patronised. A feature of this year'e gathering was that ten per cent ot the gate money was to be contributed to tte Belgian Fund. Under such circumstances the Committee were deserving of very extensive patronage.

The programme provided a really enjoyable day's outing. The competitors were practically all resident in the district, which added far more interest to the various contests. The chief results were as follows: — Maiden race—K. Morrison ], Otaua Cup, 150 yards—handicap.— F. Hanfliog, ]2yds, 1; J McNair, lbyds, 2. Half-mile—McGlynn, 20yds, 1; L. Peterson, 2yds, 2. 440 yards—McGlynn, 15yds, 1; L Peterson, 15yds, 2. Hurdle race, 220yds—J. Short, 11yds, 1; T. McDonald, 14yds, 2.

Bicycle race, two miles—J. Wattam, 600 yds, 1; J. Furmage, 750 yds, 2. Stockman's competition—H. O. Mellsopp 1. Tilting-the-ring—H. 0. Mellsop

Stepping competition —H. O. Mellsop 1.

Young couples' race—J. Grimmond and Mias Hammond 1. Tug-of-war—Waiuku team beat Otaua.
