FOR ACTIVE SERVICE.
A Farewell Social. Glenbrook Hall was packed the other evening when occasion was taken to tender a social to thr.e district yourg fellows who ara leaving for active service, viz., J. Crijjhton, H. Lucas and S. Water?. The affair was arranged at short notice, but was a complete success. A good Lumber attended from Waiuku.
An enjoyable dance programme was gone through, and songs were contributed by Messrs J. Grimmoud and C. H. Greenhead.
After the supper adjournment Mr Hcdgkinson made a few remarks complimentary to the departing soldiers, and said he felt sure they would give a good account of themselves. It was certain that all who went away would not return, but he hoped they would return safely after victorious efforts and distiniuished by the honour of fighting to uphold the Empire.
Mr J. Whitham also endorsed the remarks made, and effectively referred to a few non-enthusiasts standing in the doorway whose actions did not show a high degree of patriotism. He instanced the local boys having proved themselves men by their enlistment, and said that now was the lime for others to show what they were made of. In response to his invitation half-a-dozen put up their hands to follow the lead given by the guests of the evening, amidst hearty cheers. The gathering dispersed after the singing of "For They are Jolly Good Fellows" and "The Marsellaise."
