AKA AKA DRAINAGE BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Aka
Aka Drainage Boatd took placs on Friday last at the Aka Aka hall. There were present: Messrs G. Hull (chairmar), b'. P. Henry, E. T. Bent and S. N. West. DAMAGE TO DRAINS.
Mr West reported in reference to damaged diains which he had to inspect, near Goedwin aid McConr.ell's sections. The drains were certainly in a bad state, especially frontirg Goodwin's place. He thought the Board should go into this matter of damaging the Board's drains. There was a lot of places where cattle were breaking in cn the drains.
Mr Henry said that road cattle were breaking the drains in many places and doing damage. There were some bad place 3 along Neil's section.
The chairman said it was a serious matter, as such damaging of drains would cost the Board a lot of money. Mr Henry remarked that the Board should not tolerate it. Settlers should make drinking holes without letting cattle break into the drains. It was not fair to other ratepayers. I'he clerk pointed out that anyone could make a loop drain from the main drain for a drinking place for cattle.
Mr Henry suggested that all responsible for damage should have notices that if not put right the Board would do the work aud charge them with the cost. The chairman said the last time tha Board did that there were objectors to it, as it was a hard matter to allocate tHe cost of repairing the "breaking in." They had to accept the contractor's word as to what it cost to remove the slips on the different frontages. Mr West said bo was charged 50s for his, and he could have done it in about an hour. If his frontage cost 5Cs he thought Goodwin's would cost about £ls.
Further discussion showed that the main drain was not on the bcundary of the drain reserve and that people's cattle were trespassing in addition to doing damage. The chairman said if the Board intended to do anything they should do something solid and put a stop to the nuisance.
On ihfi motion of Mr Henry, seconded by Mr Bent, it was decided to give 14 days' final notice to all those doing noticeable damaue to put same in order; otherwise the Board would carry out the work at their expense. The clerk reported that he had seen Mr Louden about damage to Mawhitiwhiti drain, and he bad promised to do his best to give the Board satisfaction. INEFFICIENT FLOODGATES. Mr Henry commented on an inspection of the floodgates being necessary, as the gates were not acting satisfactorily. It was arranged that the chairman, Messrs Bent and Henry inspect same. CLEANING UF DRAINS. The question of calling tenders for cleaning out various drains was discussed, and it was decided to invite applications for same at once. FINANCE. The statement of finance showed bank overdraft at £55 and rates outstanding to the amount of £:!35. Accounts totalling £ls 2a Id were passed for payment.
