The Government has made an arrangement with the Colonial Sugar Company which will ensure a supply of Migar nntil Juno 10th, at a price which will not increase the present prices by nd per lb. Mr Massey states that the result of the arrangement is that sugar is now cheaper in New Zealand than in any part of the British dominions.
The election campaign for Dunedin Central has started. In the ooinion of the Solicitor-General the power of validation in regard to election irregularities, as provided by the Legislature Act, does not apply to such cases as that of the Dunedin Central contest. The Crown Law Officer shows the absurdity of such law being applied to take away the seat from a person lawfully elected and give it to the one defeated, A Fiencn newspaper gives a very good test to determine the nationality of a man Ret before him a glass of beer with with a fly in it. Il he asks for a fresh glass he is an Englishman ; if he removes the fly aud drinks the beer, he is a Frenchman ; if he drinks the beer, fly and all, he is a German. This information may be useful for spyhunters.
A writer in the " Petit Parisien " tells of a conversation he had with a young officer of the British Indian contingent, who had studied in Germany at Heidelberg. Every day he was the subject of the pleasantries of the other students, who told him that he was only a savage, that the English had never been able to fight by themselves, and that the AngloIndian army was not fit to black the boots of that of Germany. "We are going to put that to the test," he said with a laugh, and, touching his sword, he went on : " We have some good polishers here." .
