CONSTABLE WILLCOCKS' PROMOTION.

Constable J. S. Willcocks, in charge of the Pukekohe Police District, baa gained wtll-merited promotion and on assuming the rank of Sergeant he is to be transferred within the next few days to Wellington. He will be succeeded in Pukekohe by Sergeant Cowan, at present in charge of the Wharf Police Station, Auckland, the new police regulations providing for Pukekohe to he a centre with a Sergeant in control. During his stay in Pukekohe of nearly five years, Constable Willcocks has won the esteem and confidence ot the residents as a thoroughly capable and courteous officer. Always ready to respond to the call of duty, he has carried out his responsible Office with great tact and efficiency, and the people of Pukekohe will watch his future career with interest. He joined the force in Wellington in 1899, and was subsequently stationed in turn at Napier, Wuipawa and Whakatane, coming to Pukekohe on April Ist, 1911. At that time Pukekohe only had one constable in residence, but a second constable was added about a year later. Further, there was no clerk of the Court stationed in the town, all Court business being worked from Hamilton and the Court sittings only being held monthly. Constable Willcocks soon convinced tbe authorities that Pukekohe as a rising town and the centre of an important district wai entitled to have its legal requirements promptly and conveniently carried oul, with the result that Pukekohe was separated from Hamilton and Constable Willcocks was appointed Clerk of the Court. Under his charge the magisterial work has increased from some 40 civil plaints in 1910-11 to close upun 400 last year, whilst a fortnightly sitting has replaced tbe previous monthly sitting of the Court. -
