LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Members of tbe Pukekobe Bod and Gun Club are requested to attend a shooting practice to be held next Saturday, at 2 p m. A meeting of the Pukekohe Borough Council is to be held tomorrow (Wednesday) evening and the monthly meeting of the Franklin County Council takes place on Thursday next.
During tbe quarter ending December 31st last, 26 prosecutions came before the Pukekohe Police Court, as compared with 14 for tbe corresponding period of the previous year. Similarly 33 civil cases were dealt with by the Magistrate—an increase of four on the figures for the correspondiug quarter of 1913. The Auckland Dairy Produce Committee has hied the wholesale price for butter and eggs for the' week ending January 16th as follows:—Factory butter, Is lid; farmers', separator and dairy butter, 8d ; eggs, Is per dozen. Whilst members of the Post and Telegraph staff were engaged yesterday morning in erecting an overhead cable in King Street, Pukekohe, in the vicinity of the Post Office, three horses being driven m a waggon " shied " at the large cable reel and swerving across the road came in contact with, the verandah post outside Mr Wm. Eoulston's premises, at the corner of King and Hall streets bringing it down with a crash. A few minutes previous to the accident three children were seated in a gig at the spot were the waggon struck th# footpath A meeting of the Mauku Athletic Club was held on Saturday evening, the president; Mr J. Goldsworthy, presiding. Accounts and matters in connection with the New Year's sports were passed for payment. The secretary, Mr H. C. Hay, produced a statement showing that the meeting had been run at a small profit, there being a credit of £2 5s 9d from the day's meeting". Added to last year's balance, the club has still a credit balance of about £'23, notwithstanding the fact that the cl'ib had given £5 to the Patriotic Fund and £5 to the Belgian Fund. The usual procedure of fixing the | day of the weekly half holiday will ! be carried out by the Pukekohe I Borough Council at a meeting to be ! held on the 27th inst. For many years past Saturday closing has been ' enforced and although it is understood that the retention of that day 1 for the holiday is fav ured by the i majority of the tradesmen a movej ment is on foot in favour of the holiday being fixed for Wednesday. j Counter petitions on the subject are ' being signed and will be duly pre--1 sented to the Council. An accident that resulted in a broken leg, bofel Mr McFarlane, a stable-keeper, employed by Mr Clarke, licensee of the Pukekohe Hotel, yesterday. After unharnessing a liorso in the stable, the unfortunate man lead the animal to drink at a water trough, outside the building. McFarlane had just finished turning the water on to fill the trough, when the horse, startled by the souud of the flowing water, kicked McFarlane, breaking his right leg below the knee. He was found in a prostrate position by Mr Coady, who, with the assistance of suae willing helpers near by took him to his home close by, on a stretcher, where Dr. Bronte attended to the injured limb.
