PUKEKOHE ATHLETIC CLUB.
Its Successful Inauguration. Op Wednesday night some thirty residents of town and country lcspor.ded to the conveners' appeal for a meeting to form an athletic sports league in Pukekohe. The place of meeting was the Borough Council Chambers. The Mayor, Mr C. K. Lawrie, who .resided, britfly announced the object of the meeting. A CLUB FORMED. Mr A. 0. Woollett, who -vas the prime mover in calline the meeting, said he had frequently met with the complaint "that it was hard lines they could not run an athletic sports meeting in Pukekohe." He thought it was, but he believed it was possible to run a very successful gathering. For this reason he had taken steps to bring together the heads of the varioui athletic institutions. The first business was ti furm an Athletic Sports Association to be known as the Pukekohe Athletic Club, and IhU all present in the room be members. AMATEUR OR PROFESSIONAL? This being cl.ne, the next matter of moment wa3 this question: Should the nueti'g be tun under amateur or professional juri die'rn? Mr O'Loughlen moved, That the meeting be purely amateur, the motion bcirg seconded by Mr Gu?st. Mr McKay moved as ai amendment, t".at they have an open meeting—amat:ur and protessioi al. Mr C. He considered an ama'.eir meeting could be run eheapev " Mr McKay said his experience was that the public favoured an open meeting. He was certain they would get the 6uppart of the runners and of the public. On being put to the mooting the amendment 'to have an "open" was carried. WHICH ASSOCIATION ? The matter of which Union tho newly formed Association should affiliate with was loft to the incoming committee, OFFICERS. The following officers were elected : -Patron, Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey ; president, Mr C. K. Lawrie ; vicepresidents, Messrs C. Clarke, J. Pollock, I. Motion; secretary, Mr A. 0. Woollett; assistant-secretary, Mr W. H. Guest; treasurer, Mr J. O'Loughlen; committee, Messrs J. Boatty, J. McKay, V. Rogers, W. Duggan, Mc<»!ynn, W. Wright, A. McEae, Cargill, Askew, W. Bryant and Marshall ; auditors, Messrs J. T. Stembridge and Cargill. DATE OF SPORTS. The date on which the sports should be held was discussed at some length, and was finally roferred to the committee to dotermine. SUBSCRIPT!! IN. The subscription for members was fixed at )s, a motion that it be K's being lost. VOTES OF THANKS. Votes of thanks were accjrded the chair and Mr Woollett for the trouble he had takeu in convening the meeting. COMMITTEE MEETING At a subsequent meeting of the committee Mr Cargill was elected chairman. It was decided to open a banking account with the National Bank and the treasurer, in conjunction with ei'her the secretary or chairman, was authorised to sign cheques. The next meeting of the committee is to be held on Tuesday night when representatives from the two governing Auckland Athletic Associations are expected to be present to put forward the case for their respective side*. Messrs Boatty, Mcßae, Rogers, McKay and Guest were appointed a sub-committee to draw up a programme with suggested prize money aud report at next meeting.
