LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Lodge Excelsior some time ago provided a white rooster (now stuffed, mounted and inanimate) for competition at cards amongst Oddfellows. The first bout took place last night at the Oddfellows' Hal! when the Excelsiors proved victorious against their sister lodge, Loyal Pukekohe, winning by 92 to 54 games. The lodges played 14 aside. After the card tournament refreshments were enjoyed when "The King.'' "The Boys at the Front" and the two local lodges were toasted. A game of hockey was played on Saturday between members of the Ladies' Hockey Club and a team of men. The game resulted in a win for the men by three goals to two. (ioal> were scored by Messrs McAlrster (2) and King for the men, and (!. Maxwell for the ladies. Afternoon tea was provided and a most enjoyable time was spent. During the afternoon Miss Maxwell, on behalf of the Ladies' Hockey Club, presented Mr Thornton with a silver-mounted umbrella as a token of the esteem in which he is held by the Club. During the season Mr Thornton had acted a* coach and referee to the Club.

Mrs H. Mason, who had been a resident ol "Hillside." Pukekohe, for eight years, and her daughter, Miss Ethel Mason, left here yesterday to make their home in Heme Hay, Auckland. Mrs Mason was a vice-president of the Croquet Club and bad just been made a vice-president of St. James' Ladies' Ouild, and was also on the committee of the Pukekohe District Horticultural Society. Mrs Mason's departure will leave a gap, as she was much sought after as a member of committee. At all functions there have been few women more active than Mrs Mason whenever refreshments were to be prepared and dispensed.
