WHANGARATA.

BUILDING UP A HEKD

Mr and Mrs Joseph Fulton, c< Whangarata, have just returned fum a very enjoyable month's holiday spent with their friends in Taranaki. While in the province which is famous for dairy cows and highpriced land, Mr Fultcn had an excellent opportunity of seeing many of the very choice herds of pedigree and grade Jersey and Bolstein cattle. His brother, Mr N. Fulton, who is one of the Government dairy instructors, and Mr R. J. Levin, of Normanby, who judged (he Jerseys at the last Fianklin A. and P. Show, spared neither time nor energy in showing him over the best districts by rail, motor'car and gig, and this afforded a splendid chance of meeting the best stockbreeders and inspecting the very best herd?. Indeed, he could not have been in the hands of two better men. We are very glad to learn that Mr J. Fulton purchased a young pedigree Jersey bull to head hia dairy heard at Whangarata. This bull was bred by Mr A. A. Ward, of Miro Meadows, Taranaki, who has the reputation of possessing the most even type of Jerseys to be found. Mr Ward is easily the leading prize-winner of the west coast shows during recent years, and when it Is stated that Mr Fulton's new bull is sired by the famous imported bull "K.C.8.," and out of Mr Ward's champion show ring cow "Up-to-date," readers will at once recognise that he has secured an animal of very aristocratic breeding. "Up-to-date" is new nearly finished a season under the Government semi-official butter-fat test, and she is putting up a grpat record which will be duly published in the Agricultural Journal when ber season's work is completed. Her lowest butter-fat test during the season was 4.6 and her highest so far is 6.4. "K.C.8." is so well known in both the North and South Island as a sire of record-b/eaking dairy heifers that comment on him is unnecessary. We heartily congratulate Mr Fulion op his pluck and enterprise in securing such a choice and valuable animal, and we wish him much success in his efforts to improve his dairy herd.
