SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the school committee was held in the school on Monday; present—Messrs C. Leathern (chairman), W. Bates (secretary), F. Abbott, S. J. P. O'Leary, J. McTavish and R. Munro. The monthly repoit showed 69 on the roll, with an average attendance of 62. Messrs Abbott and O'Leary were appointed to assist Mrs Lipplatt in procuring timber and material for the erection of a boat-swing, seesaw and a slide. Messrs Leathern and O'Leary were appointed to get the blackberries cut and the mound ploughed. The committee inspected the residence of the headmaster, and it was decided to request the Board to do certain alterations and additions that were urgently required.

It 'vas also decided that the Board be requested to hand the money that it receives as rent for part of the school paddock back to the school committee, to enable them to clean up the school grounds. Several small accounts were passed for payment, SOCIAL. The first of the winter socials held by the local branch of the Farmers' Union was held in the hall on Friday, and was a success. The first part of the evening was devoted to playing euchre. Mr S. McCaw and Mr J. Pendergrast carried out the duties of referees. The prize winners were as fol-lows:-Ladies: First prize, Miss J. Clark; aecord prize, Mrs Pulman. Cents: First prize, Mr G. Fraser; second prize, Master C. O'Leary. After the card games were finished a dance was held. Mr G. Haywood carried out the duties of M.C. Mr S. McCaw again proved himself to be the right man in tke right place, and carried out his duties as secretary in his usual courteous manner. ILLNESS.

His many friends will regret to learn that Mr C. O'Leary, has been ailing for some time, shows no signs of improvement. Mr O'Leary is leaving for Auckland to place himself under the care of Mr Savßge. » SERVICE OF SONG.

A very successful service of song was held in St. Mary's church on Sunday evening last, In aid of the new church building fund for Mercer. During the service solos were sung by Messrs C. Tribe, Seymour, Elliott and T. (j. Eviaon. Despite the stormy night a fair number turned cut to hear the service. The Vicar, the Rev. Mr Foulkes, was the preacher for the evening. The choir was assisted by some members of the Presbyterian choir. Miss Lorie presided at the organ, and carried out her duties in a very able manner. Miss J. Clark and Miss N. Batea, vijlins, assistted with the music accompanying the hymns.
