Mr Wright, who beaded the deputation, suggested that a committee comprising an equal number of numbers of the Council and the Bard (in lieu of the trustees) should up to administer the pointed out the public property of the band was worth about £lsl and personal property £97. Mr Curd referred to the loss that members ot the Banl had undergoue in trying to keep things going. "I would like to bring a few matters before you that I consider require your earnest consideration, and 1 sincerely hope, for the benefit and prosperity of the town, you will assist me in bringing them to a successful issue. The first, and most important, is a drainage scheme. This matter has been well discussed both inside and outside the Council, and I can only recommend that we submit the proposal to a poll of the ratepayers for their decision. 1 would strongly recommend that the ratepayers be asked to vote on the question of municipal or private enterprise lighting for the town, or at least tbe most thickly populated portion of it, and consider that a poll "should te taken on this subject at tbe same time 83 the drainage poll. 1 also consider that the people should be asked to vote on the question of obtaining the bush, known as Boose's bush, for a public reserve for all time. Another important matter that the ratepayers should be asked to vote upon is the equipment of the Fire Brigade; this is a matter that should be done as by so doing we are only assisting ourselves by having an institution in our town that if occasion arose we would be at least in a position to assure the people that we had made every precaution. The matter of providing public urinals should receive attention. At present there is no accommodation of the sort available to the public. The waterworks system must be carefully gone into. I know that the working arrangements are not satisfactory. An engineer has been preparing a report for some time, but this is not yet to band. I would suggest to the Council that the Waterworks Committee bring in a report as scon as convenient as to the best method of dealing with this very important matter. The recreation ground will require early attention, in the matter of erecting gates, etc., and generally putting the ground intu order. The public cemetery, which has now been handed over to the Borough Council, must be seen to. The ground should be surveyed and a proper plan prepared efoowirg each lot purchased by each individual. The cemetery should also te clea r ed of gorse and noxious weeds."
Cr Hubbard expressed his belief in municipal enterprise for lighting. Cr Hurley thought the Council should discuss the question as to which lighting system was the best, prior to taking the poll. Jt was decided to hold a special meeting at some future date to discuss the Mayor's report. WHEEL TRAFFIC BY-LAWS. Cr Pollock moved, on behalf ot the Works Committee, that the wheel traffic by-laws be enforced. The Mayor seconded the resolution. Cr Bilkey opposed the motion. There were many farmers who used a waggon only orce or twice and it would come very hard on them. The resolution was carried. Cr Hubbard moved that in cases where the foreman found any person transgressing he write them giving them 21 days to alter their tyres or they would be prosecuted. Cr Hurley seconded the resolution, which was carried. FINANCE. Cr Hamilton moved that the Finance Committee go into the finances and report at next meeting aa to what amount should be placed on fixed deposit. BROKEN CULVERT.
The foreman was instructed to attend to a broken culvert on the Paerata road. PAERATA KOAD. Cr Bilkey moved that scoria be put on the lilliogs on the Paerata road.—Carried. (Balance of report next iebue.)
