PUBLIC OPINION.

Technical Classes.

A CDLUMN FOR THE PEOPLE This column is " The People's Column." We invite them to express their views on all public questions and matters affecting the district. We do not identify ourselves with the opinions expressed bv our correspondent?

[TO THE EDITOR.! Sir,—l am very pleased to note tbat the committee of the Technical School have arranged for adult clas es in woodwork every Tuesdaj night during the winter. Last year 1 was one of the few adults that attended these clisses and I am quite sati-.fied that (he reason why they are not better attended is because the committee have never explained to the public waht a good thing tbey have to offtr. The fee for a course of 36 lessens of 2J hours each is only 30s. The classes commence at 7 p.m. Bnd close at 9.30 so that everybody gets home at a reasonable h ur. The committee provide an instructor for the class and also a complete set of tools and a bench for each student, they also provide the timber free of charge. If a Btudei.t wishes to make any article for his own home he can da bo and when the work is finished it is bis own to take away provided he refutda the actual cost of the material. The woodwork iustructor is exceedingly painstaking with hiu class, and he is a very capable teacher. As there are only about 18 fully equipped benches the committee can only take a limited number of pupils, so that any adult who wishes to take lessons should apply early so as to avoid disappointment. There is to doubt about the great convenience it is to be able to handle woodworking tools, especially to farmers and marriid nun, and I cannot understand why the committee have not advertised these classes better so t.at residents would know that these benefits are at their very doors. A sum cf over £2OO was collected by the residents to get this technical school Btarted and now that it is an established fact the classes are not being attended tiimply because the public dq not know what a good thing the committee have to offer. 1 have gained such a lot ot useful information at these classes that I would be extremely sorry to see tbem fall through owing to lack of students, and I feel sure that it any aduit3 come along and join they will, like myself, admit at the end ot the term •hat they have had more than value for their mor.ey.—l am, etc., B. H. ANDREW.

[We are glad to give this advertisement to the carpentry classes. Mr Andrew has hit this nail on tbe head.Jbut the committee doubtless have other nails for other classes which also should be driven home.—Ed.]
