Another Successful Gathering i Although clashing with a similar I sports fixture in the district the | ahletic sports and picnic held at j Buckland on Saturday last were very successful. Ammgat the visitors was Mt R. P. bollard, MP. for | Raglan, who joined ia the sheaf* pitching: contest and got his afieaf i.p to the 21 feet bar. There wt-re about 300 people present, Mr Jett'eris' paddo.k being the site of the sparts. Tha office-bearers were:—Patron, Mr R. F. Bollard, M.P.; president, Mr A. P. Home; vice-president, Mr A. J. Melvilla; handicapped, Messrs Braitbwaite, Appleby, and L. Bilkey; judge, Mr F. McKeane; starter. Mr VV. Brathwaite. The officials, and parti- ' cularly the secretary, Mr L. Bilkey,

worked very enthusiastically and greatly contributed towards the success ot the day. Thera weri about 20 events on the programme, many of which were very keenly contes!ed. In tne high jump for horses E. J. Bilkey bad a cjupls of spills, his mount being over-fat and raw. But by plucky and clever horsemanship he won tbe event. For the sheaf-pitching event there were about 40 entries and this proved one of the most interesting contests of the day. When the bar reached a hfijht of 22 feet there wera only six contestants left in Wilf. Bilkev just failed, C. Parker got over, S. Smith did it easily, and W. Hewitt, Dynes Fulton and D. Smith just got over with nothing to spare. The bar was pgaio raised when W. Hewitt and D. Smith fell out. At 23 feet Dynes Fulton failed. At the height of 24 feet C. Parker cleverly got his sheaf over and wo - , S. Smitl being second. A little later tha bar was pulled to its u'most limit and Parker, taking a throw, balanced the sheaf on the bar where itremiiaed. Pitching the sheaf—C. Parker. 24 feet, 1; S. Smith, 2. Forty competitors. Married men's race, 100 yarda— Tbe judges were unable to separate G. Kelson, W. Barnaby, C. Dickson, Hewitt and A. Warner, who were asked to run the event over. This finish was easily one of the best that has ever been seen on the grounds.
