FARMERS' UNION SOCIAL CLUB.

The annual ball of the Farmers' Union Social Club took place in the hall on the 21st inst.

The hall was decorated with nikau palms and looked very well. The niffht being tine brought out a large attendance of settlers, visitors coming from as far north as Auckland. Mr Sid. McCaw, tho energetic secretary, had made very complete arrangements for the comfort of the visitors, and ho also deserves the best thanks of tho committee for the timo and trouble he went to in mAing arrangements for tho ball. The committee consisted of Messrs J. McTavish (chairman), S. McCaw (secretary), J. Graham, junr., G. Ilayward, J. Pendergrast, Misses Graham (2), Grant, Bates (2) and Grantham.

During the evening Mr E. McKenzie presented tlio points-prizes won in connection with the series of euchre social.s held during the winter evenings, the prizes being won as follows: Ladies' iirst, presented by Miss E. Graham, won l>y Miss Grant ; ladies' second, presented by Mr j. MeCaw, won by Miss R. Graham ; ladies' third, presented by Mr G. Hay ward, won by Miss O'Leary. Gents' iirst, presented by Mr J. Pendergrast, won by Mr j. Graham, junr.; gents' second, won by Mr W. Fraser ; gents' third, presented by Mr S. McCaw, won by Mr C. Douglas. At the conclusion of the prizegiving Mr McKenzie, on behalf of the committee, made a presentation of a handsomo brooch and a small silver trinket box to Mrs J. Graham, and a dressing case to Master Austin Graham. In making the presentation Mr McKenzie referred to the f;reat kindness of Mrs Graham and Master Graham in coming forward and providing the music for the socials during the winter months without fee or reward, and asked them to accept the presents as a mark of esteem and goodwill.

Master Graham responded on bohalf of Mrs Graham and himself, and acijuitted himself in a very creditable manner.

The floor was in liiv-t-class order, and with g'.od nui.-ic a very enjoyable time was spent. During the evening songs were contributed by Messrs Martin and Guerney, and >hnrt speeches I>3- Mossr- J. Graham and McTavish. ATr G. Haywood carried out the duties of M.O. FARMS HOLD.

Mr Kearney, on behalf of the congregation and Bible class, to Mrs Parsons of a handsome afternoon tea set. Mrs Parsons has been organist in the Presbyterian church fur the last two years, and is leaving tho district. SNEAK THIEVING. A very mean theft was committed at the hail on Saturday morning, after the closo < f tho Farmers' Union bail, by someone entering the hall by a window and removing the balance of tho refreshments left over after tho ball. The ball committee are to hold a meeting soon to decide what is to ho done about the matter as thov think they can lay hands on the culprit. A sneak thief recently visited tho local creamery by night.
