TUAKAU TENNIS CLUB

The secretary of the above club bas received a communication from Mr R. F. Bollard. M.P., stating that he will be pleaied to accept the position of patron ti the club and enclosing a cheque. The secretary anticipated that the new courts will bs ready for the official opening on Wednesday, November 26th. NEW TELEPHONE SERVICE. The Tuakau Progressive League are moving in the direction of attempting to sscure direct telephonic communication with Auckland At present Auckland can only be reached through Pukekohe, "which frequently results in delays which runs into hours at busy times. LITERARY AND DEBATING SOCIETY. The usual meeting of the above society was held on Tuesday evening, the Rev. W. Butteiworth occupying the chair. Members present made various Eugges.ions as to the form the meeting should take, the final decision being in favour of an inpromptu debate, the subject being "Are Strikes Justifiable." A little difficulty was experienced in getting members to take the affirmative side, but two volunteers came forward hoth, however, explaining that they would be speaking against theireonvictioas. A very interesting debate resulted. It was quite evident that several speakers had made a close study of the labour movement. One msmber went back several centuries in English history, and showed that labour had been gradually forced to organise in selfdefence. So much for the strike. I might mention in parsing that three members of the Society are at present doing duty in Auckland.
