WBITEBAIT. The whitebait season has started in earnest, and bids fair to be a good cne. Large catches have been taken durirg *he past week, end a plentiful supply hai been sent to Auckland besides what the lecal canning factory took. Trie factory has bad to go at high pressure to cope with the supply, and some thousands of tins were preserved during the week. Some of the catchers were making good money, up to £8 per day while the rush lasted. Even girls and boys made their £5 some days. It is estimated that over £4OO was paid out during the past six days. A NEW FLAXMILL. A cew flaxmill will be erected shortly by Messrs Frost on the western bank of the river. A site has been purchase! consisting of eighty acres of good sloping land for drying the fibre, from Mr H. Casubo'n. The building will be proceeded with almost immediately and the plant is expected to be ready to run some time next month. Mr George Walker is putting his plant h order to run and it may te expected to start quite shortly. Altogether everything points to a very busy summer on the river about here, and a fair amount of work will be ofFering to suitable men.
