The queatioj of the merging of the Waiuku Road Board iDto the Frankin County Council was referred to at yesterday's meeting of the Franklin County Council, The chairman (Mr Motion) said that Cr Higgin?on, who represented Waiuku, rould not te present as he was engaged with the representatives from the Auckland Harbour Board, who were visiting Waiuku to confer about harbour ahd canal matteis. Mr Higginron wrote asking him to postpone the petition for merging until the next meeting of the Council. The chairman said he knew that a counter petitiun was being got up, not to object to the margins, but merely to defer it until the 31st March next, as certain works were in process of beiug carried out, and it waa desired that thpse should be completed by the Board.
Cr Renal! siid he cnderstiod there was no objection to the mergin?, and if there was there would be no grounds for objection as the petition to mtrge was in order. He moved that the merging take place as from March 31st next. Just now tha Council had no engineer and the course he suggested would meet the requirements of the Council, meet the legal point, and a'.ao meet the wishes of the people. No counter-petition had been filed, but he felt that the course proposed wculd meet them all.
lhe chairman said he knew the people wanted the delay, but there was no counter petition before the Ccuncil. He was anxious to see the Waiuku Road Board merge because Waiuku wanted to form a town board. (Or Wilcox: Quite Cr Flanagan: Oh, yes.) The boundary of the Road Boards went down the middle of the main street.
Cr Lyons seconded Cr Renall's motion. Ha thought they should give the Waiuku people every consideration, especially as they had no ens ineer.
The county clerk said a deputation waited on him and the people had no wish to burke the question of merging but they thought it would b3 better fur the Board to go on until the 31st March, after they had had a clean sweeping up.
To Cr Flanagan, the clerk eaid that some of the people who wanted to defer the merging to the 31st March were awiongst those who signed the petition to merge on June 30th. After some further discussion the motion was withdrawn, and it was resolved that this special maeting be adjourned until the morning of the next rfgular meeting of the Council, when the merging petition will be de3lt with. The position 13 that tha Council is bound to deal with a petition to merge within two months after the petition is presented.
