FARMERS' UNION SOCIAL. Tee second social of the season was held last Friday night. Owing to the rorgh Hid stormy Weather there wa3 not a very hrge attendance, nevertheless those who did attend had a really good time. The first part ut the evening was dcvo:ed ti placing cuchrc, tnd t>;e second to dancing. Mr S. McCaw and Mr J. Pendergrast had control c£ the card gsm33. r.bile Mr G. Hayward acted as M.C., and the:e gentlemen carried cut their duties in a businesslike m:nner. The orizos for the evening were won by Mi s Graham and Mr F. Harris; th 3 booby prizes were wen by Miss Bates and Mr G. Ilayward. Th 3 was in charge of M:s J. Giaham, a-si3ted by Mr A. Graham, acd they must be complimented on ths first-class fara provided. Mr J. Taylor, the energuia sccretirj, worked hard to make the evening a success. ROAD BOAF.D. The annual meeting of ratepayers ol the Pokeno Road Board was In Id in the tcticol o;i the 14tti May. More than usual were present. Mr G. Lippiatt was votel ty the chair. Mr R. Lyons, chairma'i of the Koad Board, r£ad the annual report and balanca sheet, which wera adopted. A credit balance of £29 83 was shown cn the ccmbined accounts. The Chairman, Mr Lyons, explained that the usual advance on the subsidy for the year had not been paid i: ti the Board's amount before the 31st March,, there was also a shortage of £lO in the amour.t of rates collected. These amounts were the causa of the apparent shortage in the Board's revenue for the year. As there was not cny criticism on the Board's actions during the past year it may be assumed that th.'ir operations have given satisfaction. A hearty vo.e of tnanks was moved to Mr T. Hicks, the retiring member of th 3 Board, for bis services during the last tnree yeais. A vote of thank 3 was also accorded to Messrs J. Brown and Son i"or th 3 use of their offica for holding meetings, etc. A meeting of the new Board was to have been held after the annual meeting, but as only one member (Mr R. Lyons) was present, tne meeting lapsed. Th 3 members cf tha new Board are:—Messrs R. Lyons, T. Gardon, P. Wyman and J. Graham and McKenzie. ILLNESS. Mr Twining, a well-known settlor of Maungaiawhiti Valley, is, I regret to say, very ill, hut bis condition- has improved during the last few days. THE MILK SUPPLY. The supply of milk at ths local creameries is rapidly diminishing, and I expect that by the end of the month they will b3 closed do vn for the season. MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY, he opening meeting of the above Society for the coming winter to:k place last Wednesday night, there being a larg>. numter 01 members present. Th. pre-ident, Mr Lippiatt, in a few well-chosan words declared tha session open. Ti:e evening vva3 devoted t) a Parlianaentury contest. Five candidates stcod for election, they were: Messrs R. Lyons, G. Lippiatt, R. Pendergrast, J. Dean and W. J. Anderson, Each candidate rp:ke for twenty minutes,, and then had to answer questions, and maat of them had a laiga number to answer. After a spirited contest a ballot was taker, the result being that Mr Lyons headed the poll. The successful candidate had to bring a bill down for discusskn on the openirg right of the second half of the session.

Mr U. McKenzie occupied the chair for the evening. At the closa the lady members of the Society provided supper, which was very much appreciate'] by these present.
