THE FACTORY PILLARBOX.

'the New Zealand Dairy Association's tutter factory was a very proper place at which to erect a postal pillar-box. That is tie poi t to which a great m?ny carts from the surrounding district come, and for settlers to be ablet:) despatch their mails from that place is a fine convenience But an essential part of the new service seems capable of great improvement; we refer to ttie hour at which the box iJ cleared. At present this take- place s-.t 5 o'clock in the evening, which is perhaps aa unsuitable a time a<3 could have been devised so fa' as meeting the public requirements are concerned, although it may or may not bo the hour which best lit- in with office arrangements. We understa ci that all of the carts come to the factory in the morning. But if the letters they bring are posted at the pillar-box they not only lie dead all day, but after being cleared at live o'clock remain ai th" post office until despatched r,:Xt morning. This means a delay of something like 24 hou;s, If letters are posted after the 5 o'clock clearance has taken place a delay oi' something like 36 hour 3 mi*' be occasioned. We understand that it may suit the convenience cf the post office to clear this box in the middle of toe day. If that is so it would certainly suit the people very much belter than the present arrangements.
