Fire Brigade Canvass.
■ [TO THE EDITOR.] Si k, —l was very pleased to see Mr Hurley refer to the canvassing of tho town by tho Fire Brigade for subscriptions with which to erect a stand for tho fire-bell. With him I agree that this is something which should be erected by the Borough Council and that the members of the Brigade should not have to go round cadging for som 'thing which is for the good of the whole community. I also think that there is a great deal too much " passing the hat round "in this town. I contend that in all cases where the public welfare, convenience or safety is at stake, the funds should be taken from the rates In tho canvass business are always certain people who are so soft-hearted, or soft-headed, that they fall easy victims, whereas the man who can afford and should pay is harder hearted and escapes. By paying from the rates everybody contributes according to his ability, and it is not a caso of working the willing horse to financial death. Of couiso there are times when a subscription list is necessary, but in a case like tho Fire Brigade's it is simply piling the agony on to a body of men who give their services to the public for nothing. —I am, etc., EUUITAS.
