AT THE BOROUGH COUNCIL

Record Short Night.

The Mayor (Mr Dunn), Crs. Johns, Lawrie, Hart, Hamilton, Bilkey and Pollock were present at the last meeting. The Mavor explained that certain alterations had been made in the loan proposals (to provide for a sinking fund, etc.) and these were approved by the Council. The committee recommended the purchase of 8i Davy Shepherd and Frost meters. —Adopted Th» Mayor said that as the ratepayers were practically certain to sanction the waterworks loan he thought it was safe to order the meters. It was suggested to do the work by day labour, as contracting In the district was said to be very unsatisfactory. The foreman is to inspect and report to next meeting as to the best method of doing the work.

It was decided to charge the Railway Department Is 3d per 1000 gallons for water (subject to a reduction if possible). With regard to the railway leases in King-street the Mayor reported that he had agreed, if it came to a question of there being only one section available, not to press the claims of the Borough Council as against the County Council. If sites were available for both bodies then they would help each other.
