FRANKLIN A. & P. SOCIETY.

Committee Meeting.

At the last meeting of the committee there were present:—Messrs J. Wylie (President), D. R. Hamilton, E. 6. Phillipps, J. Potter, J. K. Hamilton, M. Ballard, C. K. Lawrie, C. Shipherd, J. Eoulston and J. Kennelly. A Pbize Refused. The secretary reported that Mrs Wily (Buckland) had won a prize at the last show and when it was given her she demurred saying it was not worth the promised value. He explained that the committee did not put on the value, hut Mrs Wily refused to accept. The prize was for fancy butter and as it happened Mrs Wily was only entitled to a halfguinea prize as there was only one entry. The rule was read saying that the committee did not hold themselves responsible for the value of the prizes. Mr J. K. Hamilton said that if people promised a guinea prize and sent along something worth only half-a-guinea it was bound to cause trouble.

Mr Phillipps moved, That in view of the rule the winner be informed that unless the prize were accepted nothing could be done.

Seconded by "Mr J. K. Hamilton and carried. A Contested Awakd. The socretary also repoited regarding the trouble about the award for the best hunter on the ground. The prize was awarded to Mr Phillips, but later on a protest was received from Mr Johnson, who was awarded the prize, Mr Phillips being disqualified. The latter now threatened legal proceedings. [Particulars of this dispute have already been reported in the Times.!

Mr D. R. Hamilton moved, That the committee repudiate all responsibility in the matter as Mr Phillips was not entered for the class. Mr Roulston seconded; carried. Date of Show. The President'and two Vice-Presi-dents were empowered to fix the dates of the show. If no other fixtures interfere probably February 28th and March Ist will be chosen. Land Taken.

The Railway Department took about an acre (3 roods 22 perches) from the showground, and notice was received that claim for compensation should be made. It was expected that the Department would take two acres but it was now shown that less than one acre had been annexed. Mr Roulston said it was difficult to assess tho value; by taking, say, two or three acres it would have left the place quite useless for a showground. The assessment over the whole ground was £240 per acre, unimproved value.

Mr Lawrie thought that £250 per aero would be a fair valuation, but he agreed with Mr Koulston that an additional sum should be put down for depreciation of the remaining land. Loss of shade by destruction of trees and by the water supply being drained away were mentioned as additional depreciation suffered. Mr Potter said he would not ask less than £SOO for the land taken.

Mr Boulston moved, That £3OO be claimed for t the land and £IOO for depreciation. Seconded by Mr J. K. Hamilton and carried. The President and VicePresidents were empowered to support the claim.

Watek Supply. The President asked if the committoe thought the time was ripo to connect with the water supply. The committee agreed to apply for the connection, a sub-committee later on to determine the place of installation.

Appointment »f Secretary. The recommendation of the annual meeting was read that the appointment of a secretary to devote his whole time tj tho society bo considered. Opinion was genera'ly expressed that a secretary travelling the district could largely increase the membership and entries. Old members, it was stated, had been lost, while the newcomers had not been got as members. Mr Luwrie proposed, That the Socioty invite applications for the secretaryship at £l5O per annum. Mr Roulston seconded.

Mr J. K. Hamilton thought they should employ a .secretary on commision, but tb ; s \low did not find favour. The motion was earned by seven to two. It was decided to ask Mr Bockott to act as treasurer for the ensuing year. Five new members were elected.
