ACCESS TO ARAPUNI.
SETTLERS FAVOUR LOAN. ' Oriepunga Road. For some time settlers on the far h side of the Waikato opposite Arapuni .have been endeavouring without success to get the Public Works Department to replace a bridge erected by themselves over the Waititi stream which was washed away wnen the river was diverted. The matter was again discussed at the December meeting of the Matamata County Council when Mr. J. E. Makgill, of Epsom, wrote stating that most of the settlers interested in the Oriepunga road running to Arapuni had agreed to rate themM selves for a loam.of £SOO towards the of putting the road in order - again. The names of seventeen settlers were attached whose properties totalled 5057 acres and had a capital value of £17,650. The annual charges would be £32 10s, which would be covered by a 5d rate on the above amount. The chairman pointed out that _£soo would not go far in making a modern road. The engineer explained that the settlers were to stand the cost of making three-quarters of a mile of - road on condition the Public Works Department made the approach and ■ erected the bridge. The council . could not follow the matter up till < they knew what the Public Works . Department were going to do. Cr. Nickle stated he was assured that twelve signatures were certain. On the motion of the. chairman it was decided to write to Mr. Makgill -asking him to get definite promises from settlers in regard to the loan.
