DROWNING FATALITY.
MEMBER OF SURVEY PARTY Companion’s Narrow Escape. * The Putaruru police received word on Tuesday afternoon that a drown- . ing fatality had occurred in the Waikato river at a point opposite the Maraetai block, 17 miles from PutaTuru. The victim was Mr. Jack -Sainsbury, who was about 19 years of age. He was a member of a survey party engaged in surveying land in that locality. Prom the scant particulars avail- , able it would appear that the deceased and a companion went down Jo the river, where a boat used by members of the party to row themselves over the river was kept. By some means or other the boat was swept out into the river before the two men could get aboard her. Both stripped and went after the boat. Sainsbury was carried away by the current and was not seen again, while his companion was swept up on £ a small island. ” The deceased’s relatives are believed to reside in Manurewa.
