P. AND T. BALL.
BRILLIANT FUNCTION. The usual drab appearance of the Putaruru Town Hall was completely changed on Thursday evening, the Occasion being a ball organised by the staff of the Putaruru Post Office, it is difficult to vary a decorative scheme, but those responsible succeeded in a manner that called forth the admiration of all. Red and green were the colours used, and above the dancers was spread a net work of green streamers, interspersed with hundreds of red roses, suspended from the centre being a cluster of multi-coloured balloons. Butterflies were introduced in an effective manner, and the walls were decorated with red and green streamers, the lights being shaded with red. The operating box above the main . entrance had an effective looking moon displayed thereon, and the orchestral stand was also decorated in the same colour scheme. The stage, arranged as a sitting out place, had a trellis work of red and green, and suspended across the stage were the words “ Post and Telegraph,” boldly executed in red. The attendance easily constituted a record for Putaruru, upwards of 300 people being present. Rotorua, Cambridge, Matamata and the immediate district environs were strongly represented. The floor was taxed beyond the comfortable dancing stage, but this did not prevent the dancers from having a thoroughly enjoyable time. Shalfoon’s Orchestra was at its best, and Mr. M. Taylor as M.C. spared no pains in seeing to the dancers’ wants.
After supper, which was in keeping with the general excellence that prevailed, a carnival spirit was introduced by the use of confetti and novelty caps. Mesdames Wheatley, Mullane and Miss B. Campbell assisted the Post and Telegraph staff in carrying out the arrangements, and the thanks of the latter are tendered to the ladies mentioned, especially Mrs. Wheatley. During the evening Mr. Mannion returned thanks on behalf of the staff. It is intended to make the ball an annual function, and the committee have set a high standard to be followed by succeeding affairs of a similar nature.
