WAIKATO 7, PIAKO 3. Waikato hockey representative* beat Piako representatives by 7 goals to 3 at the Morrinsville Recreation Ground on Saturday after a hardfought game. Piako played three juniors, which weakened the team considerably and affected the combination. The understanding between the Waikato forwards in the first half of the game, and the sound defence of the hacks, won the game. Piako’s weakness was in the half-back line, and in the forwards, who, with the exception of Fitt, were below form.
The first half as almost wholly in Waikato’s favour and the half-time scores were 5—2 in favour of Waikato. The winners’ goals came through clever stickwork on the part of the forwards and good combination. Harvey was the mainstay of the Piako backs and but for his solid defence the score would have been much greater. Thompson in goal was frequently called upon. Piako’s goals were scored by Fitt and Evetts.
In the second half Waikato tired and for the greater part of the snell the Piako forwards were attacking. Lack of combination through the forwards being disorganised spoiled the efforts of the Piako team. Piako’s last goal came when Fitt took a pans from the right wing and sent a hot one into the goalie. It was a good effort. Waikato added two more goals in this spell, making the final scores, Waikato 7, Piako 3. Mr. Fabling, of Hamilton, ably controlled the game.
