MY CARRIER PIGEONS.
The carrier pigeons of the United States Army are now being equipped with bamboo whistles with which to scare away birds that might attack them. The whistles, very light, are attached to the birds’ tails. The surprising and constant noise keeps all predatory birds away, even the trained hawks and aflcons used by the army. The pigeon whistle originated with the Ch'nese. The whistles are lacquered in yellow, brown and black, to protect the materials from the atmosphere. The instruments carried by a flock of pigeons are all tuned to different keys. , *
